Meghnaghat 635 MW Coal Power Plant, also known as Orion Meghnaghat Coal Power Plant (Unit-II), is a canceled Ultra-supercritical (USC) thermal power plant was to be situated in Islampur on Meghnaghat Island under Sonargaon Upazila in Narayanganj District of Bangladesh (Coordinates: ###, ###). It was proposed by Orion Meghnaghat Power Limited (OMPL), a subsidiary of Orion Group, to install and operate as a private Independent Power Producer (IPP) for 25 years. As per plan, the power plant was to start commercial operation on ###. After ### years without any progress, the Government of Bangladesh (GOB) revoked its permission on ###.
In the plans on the power sector, the Government emphasizes on Dhaka as the city alone consumes 46% of electricity generated in Bangladesh (FE 2021)
