Haripur 250 MW Power Plant, is an announced power plant situated in Haripur, Bandar Upazila in Narayanganj District (Location: 23.6804, 90.52135) probably. It has been sponsored by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) as a State-owned Power Plant (SOPP) for 25 years. As per schedule, the power plant has completed its feasibility study and is scheduled to be in commercial operation in June 2025 and will retire on June 2050.
Capacity
The installed (gross) capacity of this power plant is going to be 250 MW.
Context
Haripur 250 MW power plant is going to be constructed in Haripur, Bandar Upazila in Narayanganj District of Bangladesh (GEM, 2023). This power plant is a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant that will run with LNG (PT, 2023). A feasibility study for the power plant was completed but no decision has been taken till June 2022 (BPDB, 2022) and still in January 2024, the power plant is in the same state (BPDB, 2024). The Commercial Operation Date (COD) of the power plant is planned for June 2025 (BPDB, 2022).

Environment
According to Section 12 of the Bangladesh Environment Protection Act 1995, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is obligatory for any industry (MOLJPA, 1995). The polluting industries, such as power plants, have to go through an Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) and EIA as directed in the Environmental Conservation Rules 2017 (MOEFCC, 1997). But unfortunately, no Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report was found of this project. According to the environmental conservation rule 2023 the project falls in the “Red” indicating it as a potential harmful project for the environment (MOEFCC 2023).
